Let’s talk grout. Yep, that thin line between your tiles that most people ignore until it’s stained, cracked, or just plain wrong. But here’s the thing—grout colour can make or break your tiling project. Whether you’re sprucing up a bathroom, adding flair to a kitchen splashback, or tiling around a pool, the colour of your grout isn’t just a finishing touch—it’s a design decision with real impact.

The Power of Contrast

One of the biggest choices you’ll face is whether to go with a contrasting grout or one that blends in. Dark grout with light tiles? That’s drama. It outlines each tile, making patterns pop and giving your space a bold, graphic look. Think subway tiles with black grout—it’s edgy, modern, and totally Instagram-worthy.

Why Grout Matters

But not everyone’s into that high-contrast vibe. Some people feel dark grout looks dirty, especially in bathrooms where cleanliness is king. It can also highlight imperfections in tile alignment or spacing. So if your tiling job isn’t laser-precise, dark grout might not be your best friend.

On the other hand, light grout blends in creating a softer, more seamless look. It’s great for making small spaces feel bigger and less busy. White grout with white tiles? Classic, clean, and timeless. But it’s not without its challenges…

The Dirt Dilemma

Let’s be real—light grout is a magnet for stains. In high-traffic areas like kitchen splashbacks or behind a stovetop, it can go from crisp white to “what even is that colour?” in no time. Tomato sauce, oil splatter, curry—your grout sees it all. And unlike tiles, grout is porous, so it absorbs stains like a sponge.

So what do you do? You’ve got options:

Seal it: Always seal your grout, especially if it’s light. A good sealant creates a barrier that helps resist stains and makes cleaning easier.
Choose stain-resistant grout: Epoxy grout is pricier but way more durable and stain-resistant than traditional cement-based grout.
Go slightly darker: If you love the look of light grout but hate the maintenance, consider a soft grey or beige. It still blends nicely but hides stains better than stark white.

Behind the Stovetop: A Special Case

The area behind your stovetop is grout’s battleground. It’s where heat, grease, and food splatter all converge. If you’re tiling this zone, grout colour becomes even more important.

Light grout here can be risky unless you’re committed to regular cleaning. Even with sealant, it’ll need TLC. Dark grout, on the other hand, hides stains better and can give your kitchen a sleek, industrial look. Just be sure it complements your tile colour—black grout with cream tiles can look harsh if not balanced with other elements in the room.

Bathrooms, Pools & Splashbacks: Different Spaces, Different Rules

Bathrooms: Light grout gives that spa-like, airy feel. But in shower areas, it’s prone to mould and mildew. Dark grout can mask those issues but might make the space feel smaller. A mid-tone grey is often a happy medium.
Pools: Here, grout colour is mostly about aesthetics and UV resistance. Lighter grout can brighten the pool’s look, while darker grout adds depth. Just make sure it’s rated for outdoor and wet conditions.
Kitchen Splashbacks: This is where you can play. Want your tiles to be the star? Use matching grout. Want to highlight a cool pattern or layout? Go for contrast. Just remember: practicality matters. If you cook a lot, darker grout might save you some scrubbing.

Think Beyond The Tile

Grout colour isn’t just about the tiles—it’s about the whole room. It affects how light bounces, how clean things look, and how your design feels. Want a minimalist vibe? Match your grout to your tile. Want texture and movement? Contrast it. Want something in between? Go tonal—choose a grout that’s a few shades lighter or darker than your tile. Also, think about the long game. Trends come and go, but grout is hard to change once it’s in. If you’re unsure, go neutral. Greys, taupes, and soft whites are versatile and forgiving. Grout might seem like a tiny detail, but it’s got big design energy. So next time you’re choosing tiles, don’t treat grout like an afterthought. Give it the attention it deserves—and your space will thank you.

Kitchen Pantry Design – Drawers or Shelves?

Or a pantry with drawers and shelves?!

I loved this question when it popped up our FB community group. The decision on how to design our kitchen pantry hovered at the top of my mind when designing our kitchen renovation; did we need drawers? What about shelves? What would be best for a family of four? and I was so excited to be thinking about a pantry after sooooo long of making do. So let’s explore the different design options with your pantry.

Traditional Pantry Shelving

Traditional pantry shelving is easy, common and generally inexpensive. However it can be hard to reach items at the back of shelves and very awkward to access when low or high.

Pantry Drawers

Drawers are more expensive due to the cost of hardware (runners) and materials. The benefit is they allow for maximum visibility and you can convert an existing pantry into one with pull-out drawers. There is a range of drawer options available from baskets to solid. Keep in mind that those with angled sides can impact overall storage capacity.

BUT what about a mix of both?!!! (hint – this can also help your budget!!)

In our FB community group the consensus around best pantry design was definitely a mix of both shelves and drawers with some members loving having drawers to bench height and shelving above, to some having drawers up to eye height.

Our expert, David from Cutting Edge Kitchens, recommended five drawers up to chest height with shelves above. Drawers with quality hardware can hold up to 65kgs, far more than a shelf, and provide excellent visibility and access to see items at the back. Some top design tips to consider:

Pantry can be tucked behind two doors to give an integrated sleek look.
Box caps can be fitted to the side drawers to fill in the gaps
If you think it would be annoying to open two doors to then open drawers then you could have drawers with faces to bench height with shelves above behind two doors.
Depending on pantry width you could have one door!
Install a light that comes on when the doors open for shelving

Don't forget FUNCTION - how would you best use pantry drawers?

When designing your pantry remember how it would function for you and your family. If you have drawers the trick is finding the right containers to suit the drawers, and having a mix of drawer heights, these could be:

Spice drawer (if you don’t already have this placed near your cooktop)
Baking drawer – for larger containers of baking products such as flours
Labelling the tops of containers for ease of finding products
And consider how you would store those easy-access high-use items i.e. cereals, kids snacks….

So what did I design for my kitchen? Well, after much consideration (and perhaps overthinking I’ve gone with drawers to bench height with a Hamptons-style profile and a two-door cabinet above with pantry shelving. Designing Your Kitchen: Standard Measurements for Australian Homes

Designing a kitchen that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing requires careful consideration of various measurements and standards, as well as all the aesthetic fun colour and finish choices. Adhering to these standard kitchen measurements will ensure a successful and efficient kitchen layout as the last thing we want is to be stuck with a kitchen that is not enjoyable to cook in!

Let’s dive into the key measurements for Australian homes that you need to consider:

1. Kitchen Bench Height

The standard bench height in Australian kitchens is typically 900mm. This height is considered ergonomic for most people, allowing for comfortable food preparation and cooking. However, it can be adjusted slightly to accommodate the specific needs of the household members and range from 850mm to 950mm.

2. Kitchen Benchtop Thickness

Kitchen benchtop thickness can vary depending on the material used. Common thicknesses range from 20mm to 40mm. Thicker benchtops can provide a more substantial and luxurious look, while thinner benchtops offer a sleek and modern appearance.

3. Kickboard Height

Kickboards, also known as plinths, are the recessed panels at the base of kitchen cabinets. The standard height for kickboards is 150mm. This height allows for easy cleaning underneath the cabinets and provides a comfortable toe space when standing close to the bench.

4. Kitchen Island Bench Distance

When designing a kitchen with an island bench, it’s crucial to ensure there is enough space around it for easy movement. The recommended distance between the island bench and other kitchen elements, such as countertops or appliances, is at least 1000mm. This distance allows for smooth traffic flow and prevents congestion in the kitchen. For a large kitchen with busy active family I would increase this distance to 1200mm as you don’t want this space to be to narrow with kids running around!

5. Kitchen Island Bench with Seating

Island benches are a popular feature in modern kitchens, often serving as a dining area or additional workspace. The width of the island bench should be determined by the number of seating spaces required. A general guideline is to allow 600mm of width per seating space. For example, if you want to accommodate four people, the island bench should be at least 2400mm wide.

For legroom allowance, ensure a minimum of 300mm overhang of the benchtop to sit comfortably.

6. Standard Fridge Sizes

Fridges come in various sizes, and it’s essential to choose one that fits your kitchen layout. Standard fridge widths range from 700mm to 900mm, 800mm deep with heights typically between 1700mm and 1800mm. A french-door fridge with double doors that functions well for families is around 1200mm wide and 850mm deep. When planning your kitchen, ensure there is enough space for the fridge, including clearance for the doors to open fully.

Make sure you refer to the manufacturers specifications and follow installation instructions.

7. Oven Sizes

Ovens also come in different sizes, and the choice depends on your cooking needs and kitchen design. Standard oven widths are 600mm, but larger models can be 700mm or 900mm wide and function well for families and entertaining. The height of built-in ovens is usually around 600mm, but double ovens can be taller, up to 900mm.

8. Kitchen Overhead Cupboards

Overhead cupboards provide valuable storage space in the kitchen. The standard height for overhead cupboards is 600mm to 700mm above the benchtop. When installing cupboards above the cooktop, ensure there is a minimum clearance of 650mm for a gas cooktop to comply with safety regulations and prevent heat damage to the cupboards.

Refer to both cooktop and rangehood rangehood specifications and follow their requirements.

9. Standard Dimensions for Kitchen Drawers

Kitchen drawers, including pot drawers, are essential for organised storage. The standard height for regular kitchen drawers is 150mm to 200mm, while pot drawers are typically 300mm to 400mm high. The width of the drawers can vary, but a common size is 450mm to 600mm. Ensuring the right dimensions for your drawers will help maximise storage space and keep your kitchen clutter-free.

Expert tip: Make sure the runners specified for drawers meet the expected weight of drawer content (think heavy pots!!)

Designing a kitchen with the right measurements and dimensions is crucial for creating a functional and comfortable space. Whether you’re renovating an existing kitchen or building a new one, these measurement guidelines will help you design a kitchen that meets your needs and adds value to your home.

Let’s explore safer alternatives to high-silica engineered stone for kitchen benchtops.

As of July 1, 2024, Australia has banned using, supplying and manufacturing engineered stone for benchtops, slabs, and panels under work health and laws due to health concerns related to silica dust exposure.

Given our love of the cost-effective and aesthetically pleasing engineered stone, this leaves a large hole in the kitchen benchtop market. In this blog, we’ll discuss various options for engineered stone that you can install for your kitchen benchtop and their pros and cons.

Acrylic Solid surface Benchtops

Corian Kitchen Benchtop

Acrylic solid surface materials, such as Corian, Meganite, Staron, and Evostone have gained popularity as an alternative to engineered stone.

Pro's

Silica-free: These benchtops contain no silica, ensuring safety for homeowners and professionals.
Seamless Appearance: Acrylic solid surface benchtops can be joined seamlessly, creating a sleek and continuous surface.
Easy Maintenance: Non-porous and resistant to stains, they are simple to clean.

I think we are all looking forward to a break this Christmas after the year that was 2023!
If you have a few weeks off work why not make the most of this time to fit in some easy DIY projects to improve your home? There are always little things that you can tackle yourself. We’ve spoken to our experts and put together a list of easy DIY home renovation projects for over the summer holidays.

Small improvements can really make a big impact, and you can spruce your house up beautifully to launch 2024 in the right way. Plus, we Renovating Mums love the added feel-good vibes that come from actually doing it yourself (and we need all the feel-good vibes we can get right now :-).

Some tips before you get started

Know your limitations

DIY and home renovation projects are all about knowing your limitations. Some jobs need to be left to the professionals.

For example, bathrooms can be an expensive but effective investment towards modernising your home. Every bathroom and laundry must have a waterproofing membrane designed to keep any water or leaks inside the room and directed to your floor waste. Removing items like baths, tiles etc and replacing them yourself could potentially end up penetrating the membrane and creating further damage throughout your home.

I recommend speaking to a professional before attempting to replace fixtures, to assess the potential risks. It may be worth investing in a new vanity, shaving cabinet, and a coat of paint, or it might be worth saving up the extra funds and completing a full bathroom renovation, eliminating any potential further issues.

Summer Holidays Home Renovation: Easy DIY Projects to Improve Your Home

In the Bathroom

Do some easy silicone replacement to give your bathroom that refreshed clean feel. Make sure that you choose the right silicone for the job and check out YouTube for neat ‘how to videos‘.
Look at replacing and updating handles on your vanity and cupboards. This easy change will bring new life to an old bathroom
Consider replacing your vanity with a new one, Just In Place have some beautiful original options available

Re-grout floor and wall tiles (again, youtube has some great videos – thank you Bunnings)
Add or change accessories like hooks, toilet roll holders, towel rails or mirrors.
Add alternative storage like baskets for toilet rolls, timber shelving, a bamboo ladder for towels, all of which will add more personality to your bathroom for less $$
A bit of greenery will add positive vibes; this can be placed on a stool, near the basin or try a hanging plant in one of the corners. Go with a full-sized tree or even something small like a vase of flowers or some succulents.

In the Kitchen

Rearrange your storage with labeled unified containers. We love IKEA for this purpose and suggest spices, dried food and even storage containers for your fridge.

If you are handy you can resurface your laminated bench top. Your nearest Bunnings has a number of suitable DIY products, ask for advice at the counter according to the specific finish you would like to achieve.
Like the bathroom you can update your cabinet handles for a quick, cost-effective change. Just remember to measure the screw hole distance of your current handles and ensure your new ones are the same to save holes in your cabinet doors
Give a new look to your kitchen splashback by painting the tiles & re-grouting – finish the job with a good grout sealer to protect against discoloration.
Find a place in the kitchen or near the kitchen to hang a piece of art, it can be even framed drawing from one of your kids. That ‘pop’ of personality can really lift a space, plus the kids will love seeing their hard work hanging on the wall.

In the Lounge and Bedrooms

Think of creating some big impact feature walls – refresh the colour, consider adding texture through wallpaper or even add a pattern with Easycraft wall VJ panelling or wall moldings and trim.
Indoor plants – bring the outside in! Also consider the pots, you can use woven baskets for that soft organic Hamptons feel or some quirky pieces of pottery, we’re loving these by Jones & Co in Surry Hills

Review your lighting – give your light fittings a good clean and consider new fittings, or even pendant lights for a new look
Update cushions/throws and add a new rug to the floor to define a space, simple but very effective
New blinds, sheers and curtains – a continuing trend for 2023 are floor to ceiling sheers
Add a feature mirror. Consider your placement of mirrors carefully; put them in the best location to bounce light around and increase the sense of space i.e. on a back wall.
Think about a photo wall. This is also a great project to work on with the kids… select some fabulous photos that evoke meaning and memories for you all and place them as a collection on the wall. We love mis-matched frames for that added character and find these look fab in long hallways or stairwells.
Upcycle! Over that piece of furniture? wish it was white instead of blue? Chalk paint is fabulously user friendly and it is very quick to dramatically change an item of furniture. Normally no sanding is needed which is also a plus! After the repaint think about new handles and knobs…

For Window and Doors

Clean Your Windows. This sounds like an obvious one but it’s truly amazing what a good window clean can do.
Replacing Window Hardware. When windows are open, the window hardware, i.e., handles and locks are exposed to the elements. Unfortunately, this means that they can rust quite quickly, especially in homes close to the salt air. Replacing the hardware is easy to do if you have a drill and screwdriver.
Vacuum out of the bottom tracks of all doors and windows to remove any dirt, sand & debris that builds up over time
Do not hose down the windows or doors with a high-pressure hose – they are not designed for this and may cause leaking inside or glass breakage
Check all weep holes in the window or doors sills and if blocked clear any debris to allow water to drain out of the window system when it rains
Check timber finishes regularly and re-coat if required
Lubricate any moving parts such as rollers, locks and hinges with a silicone-based spray
Flyscreens can be cleaned by vacuuming or washing with a soft brush. Allow to dry thoroughly before re-installing.

Upgrade safety and install childproofing

Childproofing is often a job that gets put to one side – now is the time to get onto this:

Fix any furniture such as shelves or chests of drawers that could tip if a child tried to climb on it.
Fix any child-proofing fasteners that have come loose.
Fix any baby gates that have broken or come loose.
Look around outside and fix any fences or gates that have become a problem, especially anything around the pool area.
Install Child-Proof Locks on doors and windows. All strata buildings in NSW must be fitted with child-safe devices that lock the window opening at less than 12.5cm on windows that are first floor or above to prevent children falling out. It’s not an expensive job and the safety devices can be easy to fit. The peace of mind it will provide you with is priceless.
Also note that flyscreens do not stop children falling. Run your eye over each room of the house and ensure furniture is kept away from windows so children cannot use these to climb

For the Outdoors

Think MULCH MULCH MULCH especially over Christmas if you are going away. The best thing to use is sugar cane – easy to buy at Bunnings and easy to spread from the bag. Aim to cover the soil with a 50-100mm thickness of the new mulch and remember not mulch right up to the base of your trees and shrubs as this can cause the base to rot.
Tidy up and rake leaves, clean out the drains
Lightly top dress your lawn to help level out any depressions and alleviate ponding
Get on top of the weeds
Consider a small vege/herb garden. It’s a great summer project with the kids and they will love being involved and seeing their hard work bare ‘fruit’. Even a few pots and planters with cherry tomatoes and lettuces will bring smiles.

Update outdoor furniture with a thorough clean and depending on finish you can give it a quick sand and fresh coat of oil or stain.
Don’t forget new outdoor cushions for that pop of colour or you can even have your old ones recovered!

5 Things To Consider When Dressing A Kitchen Window

The kitchen is the heart of any home. Family and friends get together to eat, drink and be merry. But, it can be one of the messiest rooms of the house, with the potential for food, grease, and dirt to be sprayed around, while delicious meals are being cooked up.

Choosing the right window dressings is essential to give you light and privacy control. Plus, you’ll want something that looks great and is easy to keep clean. So what are the best window treatments for kitchens? We chatted with the team from Heartwood Timber Floors and Shutters for their advice and what to consider.

1. Avoid Heavy Fabrics

Heavy fabrics in the kitchen will get splattered with food and retain cooking smells. Unless you want to be washing your kitchen window dressings all the time, it’s a good idea to avoid heavy curtains. Faux wood shutters or polyester roller blinds are great for kitchens, being moisture resistant and easy to wipe down.

2. Think About Moisture

Many kitchens have a window right above the sink. This can lead to water being sprayed onto window coverings that causes them to break down. It’s best to avoid real wood blinds, as these can warp in moist, humid conditions. Opt for practical materials such as PVC, polyester or faux wood.

3. How Easy To Clean

Even if you’re the tidiest cook, food can get splattered onto nearby objects un-knowingly. As time goes by, food gunk will build up on your kitchen blinds, making them look stained and old. By choosing an easy-to-clean material such as PVC or faux wood, you can easily vacuum and wipe down your blinds so they stay looking fresh.

4. Light and Privacy

Does your kitchen window look out over a busy street or walkway? This can mean prying eyes are constantly looking into your kitchen. The right custom kitchen blinds give you great privacy and light control, while still being practical and stylish. Some great options are faux wood shutters or roller blinds.

5. Window Storage Space

It’s the perfect time to get dreaming about all of those incredible appliances on offer. If you are contemplating a new kitchen, you can get busy shopping for all your wonderful appliances. With so many incredible appliances available in a range of impressive colours you can get busy organising all the needed equipment for your new renovation. Shop around and get a good feel for exactly what you are looking for and the budget you have available.

See how this small, dark, apartment kitchen is transformed into a delightful, light, and airy kitchen with a splash of colour, new finishes, and clever storage.

We chatted to Emily from Improva (formerly Blakes of Sydney) in Sydney about the kitchen renovation, and how they transformed the space.

What wasn't working in the original kitchen?

The original kitchen was dark, dated and didn’t function well. There was a lack of storage with an island bench at 2 different levels that restricted use.

What was your brief for the kitchen renovation?

The kitchen design had 3 main drivers:

Modern, two-toned design that would complement the existing living spaces with timber and white accents.
Improved functionality (they enjoy cooking!)
More storage and usable bench space.

What were the Must-Haves?

Open shelving to showcase books and decorations
Integrated bins for recycling
A special space that would allow for their remote wireless video intercom automatic cat feeder

How did Improva transform the space?

As it was a small space in an apartment, the renovation options were limited. We removed the existing kitchen which gave us the ability to slightly change the footprint.

We kept the oven and island in the same positions due to plumbing constraints. We also had to ensure that we covered the footprint of the old kitchen as the flooring was not changing.

Storage in the kitchen was a problem. Although the new design followed a very similar footprint, it made better use of all the space available by including wall cabinets wherever possible, shallow tall cabinetry and clever storage solutions, such as a Lemans corner unit and a custom splashback cabinet.

The clients wanted to include open shelving to showcase books and decorations, so we created a beautiful storage at the end of the island. We took it down the stairs to reach the depth of the island bench whilst creating a unique feature.

What design tricks did you use to make the space seem bigger?

We went handle-free for the tall overhead and back island cabinets to provide a cleaner look and help trick the eye into thinking that the kitchen is larger than it actually is. We used handles for the lower cabinets inside the kitchen.

We used light tones in the kitchen reflect and bounce the light, and the darker bold blue colour on the lower cabinetry and island to create contrast and character.

What's your favorite detail in the kitchen?

The sliding panel on the splashback is our favourite detail on the project. The benchtop on that run was quite deep, so we thought a splashback cabinet behind sliding doors would be a great idea to store the many spice jars that our clients had, since it is right next to the cooking area. The shelves are only 100mm deep but deep enough to store the jars. Sliders work well as they are easy to use and non-intrusive into the bench space.

Why do you think this room works?

The new kitchen feels so much brighter and bigger than the old kitchen and the aesthetics now tie in with the style of the apartment. The kitchen is also more functional.

Mixing metal finishes in your home – How to get it right?

Are you torn between using brushed bass taps and brushed nickel door handles in your home? Want to use both but not sure if you can mix metal finishes? We chatted to Belinda, Interior Designer from Morgan & Me Interiors for her guide to successfully mixing metal finishes in your home.

Guide to successfully mixing metal finishes in your home.

I’m a big fan of using different metal finishes in interiors schemes. Perhaps my love for mixed metallics started with the Russian wedding ring my mum gave me circa 1989? Either way, I have always done it with jewellery. And let’s face it, metal finishes are the bling of your interiors.

The simplest solution might be to keep everything in the same family, but if you’re more of the adventurous type, and you start twitching when everything is too matchy matchy, this is the guide for you!

I get it, your tapware, door handles and pendants are not cheap so, it’s important to get it right. Here’s a guide to successfully mix your metal finishes without the fear of making a huge mistake!

It's all in the planning

To achieve a beautiful and cohesive interior space, you need to ensure all of your colours will live harmoniously together.

Your colour scheme is the starting point when designing your interior and it holds true when selecting your metal finishes.

Always start with a materials board

This will allow you to see all of your fixture colours in one place.

Start with the colour of the flooring first. Then think about what else is in the space; benchtops, splashbacks, wall tiles, furniture frames and fabrics and finally wall colours (TIP: use paint cards from Bunnings).

Most suppliers will provide you with a sample of your proposed surface for free.

Match to neutrals or make it contrast

Once you have put this together, you can then decide whether you would like your metal finishes to match your neutral tones or contrast.

If you decide you want to match your neutrals, perhaps there is a neutral or wood colour in the scheme that would match perfectly with a metallic colour? It can form part of the neutral scheme without having to add a new colour. Your metal finish should be a shade darker than your neutral tone

When it comes to contrasting colours the easiest way to contrast is to stay with a cool or warm scheme. So if you have a grey scheme, white, black or gunmetal would work well. If your scheme is warmer and uses wood tones and orange to brown neutrals, you can cool your scheme down with a brushed gunmetal.

Finally, keep the finishes consistent so there is something that ties each of the metal finishes together.

Where to get the samples

The Laminex Accents range and Polytec have metal finish samples you can order on their websites. Alternatively ABI Interiors sell individual samples for $2.90 plus shipping or their complete set of metal finish samples for $29 plus shipping.

A HOT TIP

Keep the metal finishes as an accents only and always choose a more dominant colour.

Remember the magic rule of 3 or 5

And of course, the thing I always talk about, use the rule of 3 or 5. I LOVE this trick because it just finishes a room perfectly.

How this works:

Repeat each of the colours in your scheme 3 or 5 times in the room. This will ensure the space feels balanced and harmonious.
Place the colour at different heights around the room to draw the eye. This method absolutely works and will have you styling your home like a pro!!

So make sure when you’re thinking about fixtures and fittings in the space, you have a thought on how you might bring that metal finish through in the styling. Think about how you will place each of the items so it draws your eye around the room. When you’re styling, this is where it will all come together. If you have selected a gold tap, you might find an artwork with gold colour and an ornament that is gold.
