Even an above-ground pool requires fencing, so that’s something to bear in mind if you’re trying to maximise space.

These are things to keep in mind as you plan the layout and look at planters and furniture placement. You must always check your local regulations, however, as rules vary from state to state. I think we are all looking forward to a break this Christmas after the year that was 2023!
If you have a few weeks off work why not make the most of this time to fit in some easy DIY projects to improve your home? There are always little things that you can tackle yourself. We’ve spoken to our experts and put together a list of easy DIY home renovation projects for over the summer holidays.

Small improvements can really make a big impact, and you can spruce your house up beautifully to launch 2024 in the right way. Plus, we Renovating Mums love the added feel-good vibes that come from actually doing it yourself (and we need all the feel-good vibes we can get right now :-).

Some tips before you get started

Know your limitations

DIY and home renovation projects are all about knowing your limitations. Some jobs need to be left to the professionals.

For example, bathrooms can be an expensive but effective investment towards modernising your home. Every bathroom and laundry must have a waterproofing membrane designed to keep any water or leaks inside the room and directed to your floor waste. Removing items like baths, tiles etc and replacing them yourself could potentially end up penetrating the membrane and creating further damage throughout your home.

I recommend speaking to a professional before attempting to replace fixtures, to assess the potential risks. It may be worth investing in a new vanity, shaving cabinet, and a coat of paint, or it might be worth saving up the extra funds and completing a full bathroom renovation, eliminating any potential further issues.

Summer Holidays Home Renovation: Easy DIY Projects to Improve Your Home

In the Bathroom

Do some easy silicone replacement to give your bathroom that refreshed clean feel. Make sure that you choose the right silicone for the job and check out YouTube for neat ‘how to videos‘.
Look at replacing and updating handles on your vanity and cupboards. This easy change will bring new life to an old bathroom
Consider replacing your vanity with a new one, Just In Place have some beautiful original options available

Re-grout floor and wall tiles (again, youtube has some great videos – thank you Bunnings)
Add or change accessories like hooks, toilet roll holders, towel rails or mirrors.
Add alternative storage like baskets for toilet rolls, timber shelving, a bamboo ladder for towels, all of which will add more personality to your bathroom for less $$
A bit of greenery will add positive vibes; this can be placed on a stool, near the basin or try a hanging plant in one of the corners. Go with a full-sized tree or even something small like a vase of flowers or some succulents.

In the Kitchen

Rearrange your storage with labeled unified containers. We love IKEA for this purpose and suggest spices, dried food and even storage containers for your fridge.

If you are handy you can resurface your laminated bench top. Your nearest Bunnings has a number of suitable DIY products, ask for advice at the counter according to the specific finish you would like to achieve.
Like the bathroom you can update your cabinet handles for a quick, cost-effective change. Just remember to measure the screw hole distance of your current handles and ensure your new ones are the same to save holes in your cabinet doors
Give a new look to your kitchen splashback by painting the tiles & re-grouting – finish the job with a good grout sealer to protect against discoloration.
Find a place in the kitchen or near the kitchen to hang a piece of art, it can be even framed drawing from one of your kids. That ‘pop’ of personality can really lift a space, plus the kids will love seeing their hard work hanging on the wall.

In the Lounge and Bedrooms

Think of creating some big impact feature walls – refresh the colour, consider adding texture through wallpaper or even add a pattern with Easycraft wall VJ panelling or wall moldings and trim.
Indoor plants – bring the outside in! Also consider the pots, you can use woven baskets for that soft organic Hamptons feel or some quirky pieces of pottery, we’re loving these by Jones & Co in Surry Hills

Review your lighting – give your light fittings a good clean and consider new fittings, or even pendant lights for a new look
Update cushions/throws and add a new rug to the floor to define a space, simple but very effective
New blinds, sheers and curtains – a continuing trend for 2023 are floor to ceiling sheers
Add a feature mirror. Consider your placement of mirrors carefully; put them in the best location to bounce light around and increase the sense of space i.e. on a back wall.
Think about a photo wall. This is also a great project to work on with the kids… select some fabulous photos that evoke meaning and memories for you all and place them as a collection on the wall. We love mis-matched frames for that added character and find these look fab in long hallways or stairwells.
Upcycle! Over that piece of furniture? wish it was white instead of blue? Chalk paint is fabulously user friendly and it is very quick to dramatically change an item of furniture. Normally no sanding is needed which is also a plus! After the repaint think about new handles and knobs…

For Window and Doors

Clean Your Windows. This sounds like an obvious one but it’s truly amazing what a good window clean can do.
Replacing Window Hardware. When windows are open, the window hardware, i.e., handles and locks are exposed to the elements. Unfortunately, this means that they can rust quite quickly, especially in homes close to the salt air. Replacing the hardware is easy to do if you have a drill and screwdriver.
Vacuum out of the bottom tracks of all doors and windows to remove any dirt, sand & debris that builds up over time
Do not hose down the windows or doors with a high-pressure hose – they are not designed for this and may cause leaking inside or glass breakage
Check all weep holes in the window or doors sills and if blocked clear any debris to allow water to drain out of the window system when it rains
Check timber finishes regularly and re-coat if required
Lubricate any moving parts such as rollers, locks and hinges with a silicone-based spray
Flyscreens can be cleaned by vacuuming or washing with a soft brush. Allow to dry thoroughly before re-installing.

Upgrade safety and install childproofing

Childproofing is often a job that gets put to one side – now is the time to get onto this:

Fix any furniture such as shelves or chests of drawers that could tip if a child tried to climb on it.
Fix any child-proofing fasteners that have come loose.
Fix any baby gates that have broken or come loose.
Look around outside and fix any fences or gates that have become a problem, especially anything around the pool area.
Install Child-Proof Locks on doors and windows. All strata buildings in NSW must be fitted with child-safe devices that lock the window opening at less than 12.5cm on windows that are first floor or above to prevent children falling out. It’s not an expensive job and the safety devices can be easy to fit. The peace of mind it will provide you with is priceless.
Also note that flyscreens do not stop children falling. Run your eye over each room of the house and ensure furniture is kept away from windows so children cannot use these to climb

For the Outdoors

Think MULCH MULCH MULCH especially over Christmas if you are going away. The best thing to use is sugar cane – easy to buy at Bunnings and easy to spread from the bag. Aim to cover the soil with a 50-100mm thickness of the new mulch and remember not mulch right up to the base of your trees and shrubs as this can cause the base to rot.
Tidy up and rake leaves, clean out the drains
Lightly top dress your lawn to help level out any depressions and alleviate ponding
Get on top of the weeds
Consider a small vege/herb garden. It’s a great summer project with the kids and they will love being involved and seeing their hard work bare ‘fruit’. Even a few pots and planters with cherry tomatoes and lettuces will bring smiles.

Update outdoor furniture with a thorough clean and depending on finish you can give it a quick sand and fresh coat of oil or stain.
Don’t forget new outdoor cushions for that pop of colour or you can even have your old ones recovered!

Project Managing My Plunge Pool

Installing a small plunge pool on a budget.

We had planned a large extension on our house and were not sure if a pool would fit into the budget. It was a now or never sort of situation as once we did our extension we would have limited access to our backyard for excavation equipment.

We decided to go for it and install a little plunge pool! 2.5m x 4m

I had a few quotes from some of the big names for a variety of finishes. Fibreglass, concrete or drop in concrete. I quickly realised that the quotes were super vague with a number of exclusions.
They didn’t include excavation costs. They didn’t include fencing. They only included pavers around the perimeter of the pool. It was looking as though a complete pool was going to be anywhere in excess of $60,000.

Embarrassingly, I only had $25,000.

I started to wonder whether I was being crazy to think it achievable.

I decided to look into DIY kits. I love to project manage, and I already had my owner builder permit. I came across a supplier called Australian Kit Pool Sales. The company is a small company with an owner named Andrew who has been working with fibreglass pools since the beginning of time. I arranged a meeting and knew straight away that this man was no pushy B.S salesman. He was matter of fact and knew the ins and outs of compliance and the best way forward in terms of how we lodge our application.

We decided to do a CDC application, separate to the CDC application for my home extension and run them concurrently. This avoided a lot of costly extra work that would have been imposed on my home renovation by doing them together. Who would have known? Not me. Andrew also suggested I rethink my retaining wall plans and have 2 smaller retaining walls instead of one large one. This would save me costly engineering work.

I will refer to the company as “Andrew” for ease of reading. After all, he is the owner operation of Australian Kit Pool Sales.

We agreed on a schedule of works and who was responsible for the jobs

Cad Drawings and engineering plans – Andrew
CDC application – Me
Excavation – Me
Pool delivery and crane – Andrew
Pool connection (pump equipment etc) – Andrew
Concrete pour around pool – Me
Paving - Me
Pool fence and install – Me

So off we went...

After my CDC was approved and I had the go ahead to start I found someone with a large excavator to come and dig up my back yard. Excavator and operator cost around $100 p/h.

I was surprised at the float costs involved with these excavators. I never considered that they are so big they need to be transported on a tow truck. Float was around $600 total.

I had a lot of fill to remove before we even started digging the pool. 100 tonnes in total was removed. The man who I hired with his excavator had a contact for a “truck and dog”. This is a large truck with a large trailer attached to it. It takes 27 tonne of fill. And costs around $1300 per load. I was responsible for interpreting the engineers plans and marking out the zone for the digger to dig the hole. I had a laser level to check the depths. I could barely believe I was doing it!!!

Once the hole was dug the pool was scheduled for delivery. This was quite seamless and the part that I paid the pros to do. They craned the pool in and ran all the pipes for the pump and filtration system.

Once the pool was in I engaged my builder to do a lot of the rest. He formed up the pool for concrete and arranged the concrete pour. About $1000 of concrete, and half a days labour.

After that I engaged my tiler to come and pave around the pool. I was able to save money here. I already had a lot of travertine pavers laying around that just needed a jet wash. I think I saved about 2K by reusing these. Expect to pay around $100 sqm for tiling. While the paving was happening I sent my fence plan to a place called Fences Galore who sell online glass pool fencing. They told me what size panels I would need, and for $2100 I had all my glass pool fencing supplied and delivered. My builders then installed the fence. Another half days labour.

All of a sudden I have a fully functioning plunge pool!!!!

Our home extension is still underway and some of the pool finishes have taken a back seat.

There are a couple of jobs pending with the pool. Render a wall along one side. Redo the gardens with non climbable plants. Install a heater – this was out of our budget to begin with so we made sure the system could be expanded to accommodate one. Tile a waterline…

I don’t love the fibreglass finish around the top of the pool. It was always a big no no to tile onto fibreglass but there are now products available to do this and I will definitely do this! My tiler says it’s a summer job. Hehe. The pool cannot be empty so he will need to get in the water to do it

Below is a breakdown of my costs.

Pool shell - $9,750
Pool equipment. Hayward variable speed pump, omnilogic expandable chlorinator/control system - $3,690
Excavator and Driver - $1,000
Removal of Fill - $1,300
Pool install and fitout - $5,500
Concrete - $1,000
Fence - $2,100
Paving - $1,500
Builders labour - $1,200
Pool drawings - $400
CDC application - $450
Total - $27,890

Low Maintenance Landscaping Tips for Busy Families

Family life can be pretty busy. Juggling children, work and the responsibilities both entail means we can be so busy that spending the weekend tending to our garden is the last thing we want to do. If this sounds like you, then you need some low-maintenance landscaping ideas.
Check out these low maintenance tips that will keep your garden looking nice with minimum effort.

Low Maintenance Landscaping Ideas

Choose your plants wisely

Labor-intensive plants are not ideal if you’re a busy bee. Try to the minimise high-maintenance plants you use in your garden. For example, whilst they look beautiful roses require a lot of water, fertilizer, and pesticides as well as skilled pruning to be their best.
We would recommend Camellias for low maintenance flowering colour with attractive glossy leaves.

Utilise open space - create an entertainment area

Don’t fill your garden with planted garden beds. Utilise open space to create an attractive gathering space for your family and guests to enjoy our Sydney summers.
Whether you use timber decking, paving, decorative stone or even grass, you’ll find creating an entertainment area will be a fabulous focal point for family life.

Mulch it up

Mulch helps to keep garden beds and other areas of your garden damp by trapping moisture. This can reduce the need for you to water your garden during our summer months. Additionally, mulch can also be the best weed deterrent, as it is harder for weeds to germinate and grow through the thick level of mulch. Avoid turning the soil because doing so brings dormant seeds to the surface which will only help them grow.

Xeriscaping is great!

Xeriscape is a sustainable method of gardening aimed at conserving water through creative landscaping. Selecting slow growing, drought tolerant varieties of plants creates a water-efficient garden. Generally these types of gardens are predominantly native plants, with an added side benefit of increasing local wildlife habitats. If well maintained, a xeriscape can use less than one-half of the water used in a typical garden.

Avoid the path

In order to avoid maintenance in your backyard, it is important to avoid having large beds of flowers and plants that will need an extensive weeding. Additionally, in order to have a low maintenance backyard, it is also useful to avoid having pathways that run through your backyard. Pathways usually need consistent weeding and trimming in order to keep them clear and looking good.

Try Drip Irrigation

Drip irrigation is a low-cost option for sprinklers. This is the best option if not all of your plants can survive with minimal watering. Some of the benefits you can get from this drip irrigation are: 1) they use 30 to 50 percent less water than other regular watering methods and 2) they improve growth because smaller amounts of water used over a long period of time give perfect growing conditions.

Select Native Plants

If you’ve noticed a bit of a theme to our tips to create a low maintenance garden, its to choose native plants. Native plants are designed to survive our local climate. To help make the best out of your garden space take note of the growing conditions in your backyard and choose plants particularly suited to them.

Place sun loving plants in the areas that get full sun for at least 6 hours a day. Plants that grow in full-shade conditions will do best on the south side of your house or under trees with dense leaves. Partial shade plants do good when they are placed on the east or west side of the home where they either get direct morning sun or afternoon sun but no midday sun.

Top local native plants include:

Bottlebrush (Callistemon spp.) is the low maintenance native plant with distinctive bright red flowers that bloom in spring and summer, proving alluring to bees and birds. A fast-growing shrub, Bottlebrush prefers well-draining soil and a full sun position. They look great as a hedge, screen plant or street tree.

Everlasting daisies Also called Paper Daisies, these perennials bloom in late spring to early autumn. A low-maintenance native flower, the colors range from white and pink to dark red, yellow-orange, blue, and mauve.

Use Drought-Tolerant Grass

Using a drought-tolerant grass species can help you reduce your water requirements significantly (as well as a brown lawn in Summer), as well as reduce your maintenance.

Buffalo Turf

Buffalo turf is one of Australia’s favorite lawn varieties. It is well known to be durable and easy to grow as well as very low maintenance. The Sir Walter variety is able to tolerate full sun as well as be shade tolerant. Buffalo grass requires less mowing than other turf varieties and also needs slightly less nitrogen.

Zoysia

Zoysia grasses such as Sir Grange are another very low in maintenance turf variety. This is mainly due to very slow growth patterns. Zoysia can withstand heat, cold, droughts and it is suitable for those tougher, weather conditions. It also requires minimal water and has a lower nitrogen requirement.

Bottom Line

You don’t have to invest a lot of time and energy to make your garden gorgeous. There are many low maintenance landscaping tips that will make your lawn beautiful. Remember, designing your garden to be a stress-free sanctuary will give you place to go to when life gets a little overwhelming.

Renovation Trends for 2019

Renovation trends are always interesting and making little changes to your home can be lots of fun. However if you are considering a home renovation or design changes to your house, you don’t want to pick a trend that is fleeting – do you?

Depending on the amount of money you spend or the amount of chaos to your family life that happens when you put one of these renovation trends into place in your home, you may want the ‘trend’ to last more than just a little while!

Here are some of our favourite home renovation trends for 2019 that we think will absolutely stand the test of time – giving you and your family pleasure for many years to come.

Renovating for Needs more than Wants

There is an awareness now in the cooling of the housing market which seems to be causing homeowners to focus more on needs than wants when renovating their homes. This helps to ensure that they are not overcapitalising when getting this investment back on the resale of the home is no longer guaranteed.

This includes building smaller homes that don’t cost as much to heat or to clean, as well as those without extra optional rooms like a home theatre or a walk-in closet. People are making better use of space instead, as well as choosing homes that offer a flexible solutions for the future.

We still need little luxuries and indulgences in our homes, but these are taking on a more practical approach. This can include space that is more easily adaptable for different targets such as people without kids or empty nesters. It also includes design options and storage that will allow the owners to age gracefully in their homes – planning for long-term practicality.

The surge in people working from home has also seen an increase in beautiful and practical home office spaces. These rooms can be flexible spaces, also functioning as an ad-hoc guest room when the need arises.

Colours for 2019

Colour trends at the moment are showing a move toward more muted and organic tones, and those that bring a feeling and connection with nature. We are seeing more homes adding colour touches that bring the outdoors in, and are accentuated beautifully by indoor plants (which, quite frankly, should never go out of fashion!)

In exterior colours, we are seeing beautiful botanical shades like greens and browns, as well as elegant and classic looks that will last a lifetime like greys, white and cream.

Trends in interior tones and palettes are seeing injections of rich and bold colours mixed with more muted or natural colours.

We are seeing royal blue, lush red, deep pinks and vibrant greens, for example, popping up to give residents a warm welcome and open embrace. We are also seeing tonal reds and lots of shades of pink, including millennial pink and living coral – two of the most popular colours in interior design.

Bathroom Design Trends

Bathrooms will always be a central part of the family home, because they are just so completely necessary! In renovation trends we are seeing a lot of personal touches and eclectic additions sneaking into bathroom design. They are becoming spaces to express your individuality and create that haven of self-care and relaxation.

Again, the use of natural looks and textures is a feature in bathrooms, with the use of materials such as copper, stone and granite.

We love the look of statement vanities, such as those made from gorgeous pieces of timber, and those that are ‘floating’ or wall hung rather than on a base. We are also excited about the whimsical look of swapping out door handles with quirky knobs & knockers and the use of vintage, ornate and artisan lighting fixtures.

Interior Design Ideas

Some of the interior design renovation trends we are seeing this year are so much fun, as well as continuing the feeling of natural and organic connection. We love the sustainable and natural fabrics we are seeing, not just in upholstered furniture, throws, and cushions but also in art on the walls such as baskets, hats and more.

The movement towards natural fabrics speaks to the broader conversations happening across architecture and design right now that is all about embracing a peaceful retreat from crazy, modern life.

Some lovely use of patterns is emerging as well including bold black and whites, geometric patterns and even florals.

You don’t need to spend big to embrace these trends, with reasonably priced pieces available online or through department stores. Check out the new Natural trend in Kmart.

Outdoor Entertaining

Outdoor living spaces are incredibly important in our climate and for balancing family life. Following indoor design cues, we are seeing a more relaxed feel with statement pieces and mixing materials for a warm tactile look.

Believe it or not, but 1970s accents are coming back into trend and work wonderfully well in outdoor living areas. Think statement pieces, sunken conversation pits, focal points of fireplaces and luxe textures.

Behind The Scenes of a Better Homes & Gardens Front Garden Makeover

Today we welcome mum and business owner, Melanie Aslanidis from Beachside Collective – an online space for lovers of coastal design and island style. Melanie and her husband Stewart recently appeared on Better Homes & Gardens with the front garden and facade of their Sydney home receiving a full makeover. I’ve asked Mel to fill us in on what happens behind the scenes of a television renovation.

Home renovations require vision and a well thought out plan and many people such as I do not have a clue where to start. How do you choose colours? What structural changes could you make? How do you see the potential in a rundown space?
So when my husband and I were offered the opportunity to have Better Homes & Gardens film a front garden makeover and renovate our facade, we absolutely jumped at the opportunity! We knew we needed to improve the disaster that was our front yard, but we really did not know where to begin.

We bought this house as a family of three in 2015 when looking for a property that would allow us to extend our family beyond the capacity of our inner city apartment.
We loved that it was only a 10-minute drive from the beach, one story in a quiet street and on a corner block. We have made no changes to the property since moving in, but we did add to the family with our second son born in 2016. With two energetic boys renovating was a low priority, although we knew at some stage we would need to get the ball rolling. We do like to garden but the front yard quickly became hard to maintain with weeds coming through and the grass not surviving with the sandy soil. As we tend to enter via the rear of the home, it was also out of sight out of mind and not an immediate priority.

Having BH&G offer to makeover the front garden was pretty much like winning the lottery. We needed inspiration and expertise and someone to make decisions for us. Our brief to the production team was very laid back as we didn’t have preconceived ideas about what could work. We knew we wanted coastal style but we didn’t specify any further than that, except to say we had been thinking about incorporating shades of grey. We also love coastal landscaping but felt very limited with our sandy soil, which more resembled a sand pit. The production team seemed very happy that we pretty much left the creative vision to their discretion, as they were free to curate the space.

So how does the TV renovations process work?

The television production process was familiar territory for myself, as I work in the industry but there is 3 different phases:

Pre-production:

This is where the segment producer becomes your best friend and you work to flesh out all of the minor details. What the story angle will be, who is required for the shoot and the general plans for the renovation.
There is a lot of production prep that has to happen (4-5 separate visits by the team) in terms of measuring the space, examining any damage that may need to be prepped prior to painting, assessing the existing plants, their health and which ones will suit the renovation style. Several were removed during the shoot but we had two massive camellias we removed before the cameras arrived, as the general public don’t like to see destruction of fully grown plants. (It was sad to take them out but well worth it!)
All of the council approvals, insurances and any other paperwork is organised by the producer. Even down to advising the neighbours and sending them notices of when the cameras will be around.
Paint colours are chosen by the creative team and run by us for a final OK.
The run sheet is determined outlining detailed plans for the shoot day, and the presenters are confirmed. We had Jason Hodges heading up the landscaping and Tara Dennis for the front design and styling.

Renovations and filming begin!

So a little secret in terms of our segment production – although it appears to be filmed in one day on the show, it actually took a week for the renovation to be completed. How does this work? You only have the cameras present for day one and then they came back on the last day to film the ‘after’. This makes for an interesting production process. Day 1 the team start many small jobs and film the commencement of each. The bigger jobs are then left to be completed on the next shoot day, so you end up with many jobs ¾ done but needing completion. So for example the fence sat with a small section left to complete until the cameras came back, and they only did one lot of the wood panels on the front stoop.

Before we started:

We received a brief on some work that needed to be complete before the cameras started to roll. This included moving our huge camellias and cleaning down the fence and house with the karcher cpressure cleaner.

The Front yard is pretty overgrown, and we knew you could definitely improve on the fencing and the crooked front path that has annoyed me for four years.

Day 1: The reno and the filming begins

First up, my husband Stewart and I were asked to film a welcome segment where we greet Jason and Tara at the front gate to discuss the property and the ideas they have for improvement.Then, Tara and Jason shot the commencement of each of the different projects – clearing the front yard, prepping for painting, removing the existing fence and letterbox etc.
All up we had about 30 people on set including the presenters, the tradesman, the styling team, makeup, landscapers, camera and audio, and segment & project producers. They all arrived around 7am in the morning and left at 4pm when a storm hit shutting down the work. This put a little bit of pressure on the team, but they still managed to shoot most of what they needed.

Day 2 - All hands on deck!

This is where the amazing tradesmen start getting the bulk of the work done without the cameras to hold them up! There was a lot of painting and building taking place.

Our backyard became the storage and workshop space, as you can see on the picture below it was organised chaos!
We are very lucky we live on a corner block so it was super easy for the team to get access and leave their gear around the back.

Day 3: Colour Change

The paint really starts to make an impact. The grey is taking over from the awful beige and really bringing the coastal theme to life. The side fences are spray-painted and also look so much better against the existing greenery

Day 4: Windows Restored

The colours continue to have an impact with the home immediately looking more modern and clean. The windows are pulled out and the trims painted white removing the dark brown.

Day 5: Plants Arrive!

Painting continues and a beautiful array of full size plants arrive from the nursery. In preparation for tomorrows landscaping segment. Most of the jobs are about 80% complete, with room left to film the final touches once the cameras arrive tomorrow. We stopped looking out the front at this point so we would get a surprise with the final reveal!

Day 6 - Final Reveal

The entire crew arrives for the finishing touches, and final day of filming. Stewart and I head to work so the team can work their magic and complete the full project for the cameras. Once again it’s an early start with the team arriving at 7am, and we were not required back home until 4pm to shoot the final ‘reveal’ scene.

The landscaping is completed, the letterbox installed and the fencing finished. We were so shocked with the final result even though we had had a sneak peak through the week. Once it came together it really did transform the entire space. We especially loved the front porch area which was previously a blank space we didn’t use. Now it has great storage and is a welcoming entrance. The boys adore the front benches and like sitting out in the garden to watch the neighbourhood. Overall it was an amazing experience that has really increased our love of our home, and given us an amazing opportunity to apply the look and feel to the remainder of the property. The team very kindly gave us some advice on what they would do for other sections including the backyard and the back deck, and also generously left us enough paint to do the rest of the house in the same colours.

Screen plants are not just effective at screening out your neighbours. Screen planting can be positioned to provide shelter from prevailing winds and cast shade for those super sunny days. It can disguise ugly structures, like a shed or adjacent building and offer pops of seasonal colour.

Native & Versatile Lilly Pilly

You can’t go past the Lilly Pilly if you are looking for a native screen plant. There are 2 types of Lilly Pilly, Syzygium and Acmena. With so many varieties to choose from that its dizzying. We recommend Syzygium australe ‘Resilience’ for a fast growing, thick natural screen.

This cultivar has been specially bred to be resistant to psyllid pests (hence it’s name). Plus it will grow happily in sun or part-shade, and does best in moist, well-drained soil. These features along with the blush of bronze on new growth make this Lilly Pilly a favourite.

These species do have small attractive fluffy flowers and berries. But the berries are not poisonous, you can even make jam out of them if you wish!

Fast Growing Viburnums

Viburnum odoratissimum, known as sweet viburnum is much loved for its lush, bright green leaves and quick growth. It’s tough, surviving well in a variety of conditions without special attention.

But it can be a vigorous grower so will need clipping to keep it neat. Performs best as a 2 to 4m hedge. Small white fragrant flowers add a gorgeous scent to your garden.

Berries from the viburnum species can range from edible to mildly poisonous, so seek advice before trying.

Textural Bamboo

For something a bit different you cannot go past clumping Bamboo. Sculptural with slender canes and fine leaves, clumping Bamboo is non-invasive and forms a spectacular screen up to 7m.

Bambusa gracilis (common name Slender Weaver) is the most popular in Sydney. Its an upright, multi-stemming, compact species of bamboo that forms a dense privacy screen. With the added benefit of not encroaching into the garden space.

One of the toughest bamboo species it is both drought hardy and frost tolerant and stays lush and green all year long.

Its hard to argue with Bamboo’s ability to stylishly screen a dodgy view quickly and efficiently.

Blooming Sasanqua Camellia

A little bit slower growing, but neither the less spectacular is the Camellia sananqua. Taking 3-5 years to form a dense evergreen hedge 2 to 3m tall, the variety of colours available add a splash to any garden.

From the most stylish of whites to the most tropical of crimson-reds, their large abundant blooms are set against a glossy green leaf. Liking full sun to part-shade, they prefer a rich, slightly acidic soil.

Fun Fact : Green tea comes from leaves of Camellia sinensis….

Sweet-scented Murraya

You can’t have a Top 5 list of screen plants and hedges for Sydney, and not include the perennial favourite, Murraya paniculata (orange jessamine).

The Murraya has become one of Sydney’s favorite hedges for all of the right reasons with glossy green leaves that are small and dense, and perfumed white flowers as a delightful bonus.

Suitable for hedges 1.5 to 4m tall, Murraya grows quickly, in sun or part shade, and in most soils.

TOP TIP FOR SCREEN PLANTING

Prune little and often right from the start to form bushy dense hedges and screens.
